Always is doing an amazing job with their Puberty Education Program which has already educated over 20 million girls worldwide on puberty, making them more aware and comfortable with the growing process. Since viewing their inspiring “Like a Girl” campaign video, which you can read more details about here, I find myself championing all the amazing “Women in Sports” moments this year has brought. I am so proud to live like a girl!
So here are 3 of my favourite moments from the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
WHEN SIMONE BILES TOOK GOLD … 4 TIMES!
19-year-old Simone Biles won FOUR gold medals in Gymnastics at this years Olympics. FOUR!? Plus an additional bronze metal. That’s incredible. I am so inspired by seeing a woman, a woman of colour, be so unapologetically great. Additionally, she has faced far too much criticism on social media platforms such as Twitter, for not having a certain physique or hair style but through it all she remains confident, positive, and empowered. She is inspiring a new generation of female gymnasts making this a perfect #LikeAGirl moment!!
WHEN SIMONE MANUEL BECAME THE FIRST BLACK WOMAN TO WIN AN INDIVIDUAL MEDAL IN SWIMMING
As a girl who likes to don the title of mermaid every now and again and who aspired to live a life “Under da sea” like Disney’s Ariel in my childhood, I have always had a strong love for swimming. Simone Manuel helps break the stereotype that people of colour don’t like to swim as she walks away with 2 gold medals and 2 bronze at this years Olympics. Women everywhere of all ages are witnessing the incredible talent, dedication, and passion that female Olympians display as they show the world exactly the power that is behind “playing #LikeAGirl”.
THREE AMERICAN WOMEN BECAME THE FIRST OLYMPIANS FROM THE SAME COUNTRY TO PLACE FIRST SECOND AND THIRD IN THE 100 METER HURDLES!
Go team USA! Female women Olympians broke so many records at this years ceremony. Brianna Rollins, Nia Ali, and Kristi Castlin are runners for the American team and were able to out perform every other Olympian in the 100 meter hurdles to claim the top three spots, all three medals, A PODIUM SWEEP, for the American team. Now THAT, is how you run #LikeAGirl!!
I hope all the young girls who were watching this years Olympics saw themselves in those female athletes out there. I hope they saw how great they could be. Performing #LikeAGirl, means breaking stereotypes, breaking records, but most of all, being unapologetically us!
